12 Things That Show Exactly How You Treat Yourself

A wise person once said, “The only person you will spend your entire life with is yourself.” And they were absolutely right. The thing is, we are the people that decide who we will live with for the rest of our lives: a happy person who gets a lot of care and attention, or someone whose wishes and interests are never the top priority.

We at Bright Side are sure that people who sincerely love and value themselves are always in good company. And there are some seemingly unimportant little things that can actually say a lot about a person’s attitude toward themselves.

Not eating or drinking from dishes with chips

A person who respects themselves will throw away a favorite cup or a plate if they see a chip on it. But if a person thinks, “Whatever, it’s good enough,” and continues to eat from this plate for years, it means that at a subconscious level, they know they don’t deserve the best things in life. When we settle for less, we don’t get the stuff we actually deserve.

  • I once said something bad about the dishes at my kids’ school. The dishes were really old and had chips in them. And the people working at school went all, “So what? Do they need some fancy plates or something?” So, people don’t see a problem with feeding kids from bad plates! This is normal for them. And when the kids grow up, they will think it’s normal to do a job they hate, live in a town they don’t like, and so on... Is this what they deserve? © SuslenkovaElena / Twitter
  • For me, a plate with a chip is something I will never use. There are no other options. A crack in a plate has a negative influence on me and I will throw away even a cup I absolutely love. Yes, I liked it, but what can I do? © dobraya_utra / Twitter

Taking care of what you eat

If people eat whatever they can get their hands on, it means they don’t care about themselves. And it’s not about the price of the food (we all buy food at a discount — that’s fine). Even if a person’s income is not very high, if they value themselves, they will try to have a balanced diet and buy more quality food. And someone who eats the cheapest pasta and meat isn’t thinking about their health and is not very careful.

Serving the table before having a meal

You can go to fancy restaurants, only buy food at stores that sell the best products, and you can even follow all the recommendations from your personal nutritionist. But all of this doesn’t mean anything if you eat your meals fast and while looking at the screen of your smartphone or TV. If you spend more time eating your food, you can not only improve your digestion but also strengthen your relationship with yourself.

When Kamin Mohammadi, a magazine editor from London, went to Florence to learn to love herself and accept herself the way Italians do, one of the first tips she got was how to serve the table. A local person told her, “I set the table, put a napkin, maybe even a vase with flowers, a glass of wine. I cook something delicious. Not because someone is checking to see how good my table looks. I do it for me. I do it because I feel good when I do it. This way, I feel more attractive, I feel happier. This is how I show respect for myself.”

Not answering the phone / replying to a text if you can’t

Nowadays, when almost every person in the world has a phone in their pocket and texts are sent every minute, it has become almost impossible to ignore e-mails, texts, and phone calls. But there’s nothing terrible about not replying to texts right away. Someone who really values their time sets their priorities straight, lives, and behaves according to their own wishes and needs. This is why they have the right to ignore the sudden attempts to intrude into their private life.

Buying high-quality basic clothes instead of cheap clothes “just in case”

Some people see sales at clothing stores and they can’t stop from buying something they don’t need. And, at moments like these, the quality, the look, and the real necessity don’t worry them at all, “It’s so cheap, I’ll probably use it at some point.”

A person that respects themselves, has a different attitude toward clothes. If your clothes are appropriate and good-looking, they will help you to make a good impression on others and improve your own self-esteem. This is why people that love themselves always think through their looks very carefully and they try to buy high-quality clothes. Why settle for less and pay for something you don’t need?

Not wearing old clothes that are bad quality

Very often, people wear things that they can’t throw away, but at the same time, they can’t wear them outside because they are stretched or stained, or have holes in them. And some people even wear old tights under their pants to work because “nobody will see them anyway.”

Psychologists say: the clothes that look bad (with holes, stains, and pills) have a negative impact on our self-esteem. By wearing nice clothes, a person only strengthens their self-confidence. And it doesn’t matter if they are sitting at home in front of the TV or at work.

Not skimping on shoes

A person that doesn’t care about their health and their appearance will not really care about the quality of their shoes. They buy cheap shoes that start to look bad after one season. This approach is not only short-sighted but also harmful. Cheap shoes might look okay, but if they are made of low-quality materials, it will lead to discomfort and maybe even serious health problems.

Good shoes are made according to the anatomy of our feet, the microclimate inside the shoe is optimal, and what’s really important is that these shoes can be used for several seasons and still look great. People that value their money and their health don’t skimp on their shoes.

  • Today, I heard, “These shoes are expensive and I’m not buying them. I’ll save a hundred dollars.” I can’t be cheap on shoes. I think that shoes must be high-quality and really comfortable. © anonimusi / Livejournal

Not ignoring health problems

Our health is a priceless gift and not taking care of it is unforgivable. Everyone is supposed to know this, but it seems that there are still people that are very careless about their own health. They think that getting regular check-ups and blood tests are a waste of money. More than that, even when their bodies signal that there’s something wrong with their health, they don’t go to the doctor and just hope that the problem will somehow go away.

The consequence of this behavior will be neglected diseases and big bills for treatment. A person that really loves themselves will listen to their body and will react at the very first symptoms. They know that in this case, money is not the worst thing you can lose.

Taking care of your teeth

The condition of your teeth can tell a lot about you. A beautiful smile is not only a sign of good health but also a sign of financial wealth. Besides, teeth are one of the first things that attract attention. According to different studies, our smile plays a big role in communication with the opposite sex and job interviews.

A healthy smile is not only a sign of good health but also something that ensures confidence. Crooked, bad-looking teeth, cavities, and bad breath destroy all our attempts at looking attractive. People that love and respect themselves remember this and visit the dentist regularly to take care of the health of their mouths.

Not being cheap on bed sheets

On average, people spend 1/3 of their lives asleep. The quality of our sleep defines how we feel during the day: when we are sleep-deprived, we become irritable, absent-minded, and unproductive. The choice of our bed sheets is pretty important. Artificial fabrics can cause skin irritation and also they might have dust mites. Low-quality fabrics and unwashed sheets can cause skin problems and allergic reactions.

Those who value physical and psychological comfort will not ignore the quality of their bed linens.

  • Good-quality bed sheets are, of course, a great investment, given that you take good care of them. Of course, you can buy cheaper bed linens and you won’t even feel the difference but in several years, they will be in terrible shape. I always buy 100% cotton — this is my rule. You can also buy bamboo or viscose bed sheets. Just don’t buy sheets made of synthetic fabrics. © Alaina Zulli / Quora

Getting enough physical activity

It’s not a secret that physical exercise is good for your health. It helps to reduce weight and decreases your chances of having cardiovascular disease, stroke, or diabetes type II. Besides, playing sports has a positive influence on your self-esteem.

Scientists have proven that people who don’t have self-esteem problems are more likely to engage in physical activity. Some of them go to the gym, some do exercises at home, and others just walk regularly. All this physical activity helps to support the health of your body, reduce stress, and improve the quality of your life.

Not gossiping about others

People that don’t respect themselves feel good for a short period of time when they talk about others behind their backs. This is jealousy. Instead of doing something to change their lives, people with low self-esteem will try to devalue the success of others.

A person that respects themselves will not waste their time and energy on gossip. They don’t try to look better by belittling others. They understand that their lives are their responsibility and when something is going wrong, they are to blame, not their lucky friends.

How do you understand that people love and respect themselves?
