Hollywood has been pushing certain beauty standards on actresses for decades, dramatically impacting society’s views on aging. After all, most women at a certain age feel pressured to look a certain way and keep up with specific beauty expectations. Actress Patricia Arquette has gotten totally honest about the challenges she’s facing now that she’s in her 50s, and she wasn’t afraid to candidly share what she’s thinking about doing to keep up with her industry.

Having been acting since she was 19, it’s safe to say that Arquette is an established actress who, throughout the past 35 years, has starred in many successful movies and TV shows. And this means that she is more than familiar with the strict rules of Hollywood regarding physical appearances. In fact, she explained that there is a “real pressure to look a certain way.”

And even though Patricia acknowledges that “Everyone gets to do what they want to their own face”, she still can’t deny that keeping up with the demands of the industry is important if she wants to stay relevant.
Therefore, the actress revealed that she is seriously considering going under the knife. She said, “This is my own face, and if tomorrow I decide to have a facelift, then I’m going to do it.”

But the fact that she’s considering playing by the Hollywood set of rules doesn’t mean that the 54-year-old isn’t aware that these demands can sometimes be absurd. In fact, she explains that the industry expects its actresses to look like an “eternal ingénue,” which she described as “a Hollywood-specific look.” Speaking further of this look, she adds, “you just don’t see it much in the human race.”

And this is not the first time that Arquette has been open about the challenges she faces as a woman in Hollywood. A few years ago, she admitted, “There really is a lot of pressure on actresses to look a strange and unrealistic way.” She then added, “You’re not supposed to age. You’re supposed to be perpetually incredibly attractive because that’s the way the movie world is. You might be 50, but you need to talk 35.”

Do you think that the beauty standards that Hollywood insists on are the reason why society has become so obsessed with staying young?

Ah yes, because before Hollywood existed 54 year old women were the standard of beauty and 24 year old women used makeup to add wrinkles to their faces!

Plenty of female actresses survived on their talent rather than their looks: Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, and Glenn Close come to mind.
