It can happen that you’ve been friends with someone for years, and then suddenly they do something that bad that you don’t even know how to react. Here are some stories from people who had a change of heart about their friends after those did something particularly frustrating.

• I have a best friend of 20 years. I went into labor and was taken to the maternity hospital. I let her know right away. While I was in labor, she was texting my husband, “Hi, you must be worried. Do you want me to come over and we’ll worry together?” She didn’t know that my husband was with me the whole time.

• I got disappointed in my friend yesterday. We were sitting at the table during the get-together, and the subject of loans came up. It turns out that he is not ready to lend me more than $100 without a written receipt! He motivated it with some nonsense, which I still can’t understand.

• Had a friend who was great in college. Super fun and the sweetest personality. Fast-forward a few years and I move to San Francisco, where she had been living since college. She was pumped we lived in the same city.
  The issue? It was like pulling teeth to lock down consistent plans with her. She is one of the flakiest people I have ever met and a terrible texter. I’d have to do the majority of the leg work to set up plans.
  Work around her schedule, follow up when she replies a full day later, etc. It got to the point where we’d hang out once every 3 months, almost like clockwork, to get dinner, and then the cycle would repeat. We had a blast when we did. But it felt hollow, like I was the only one invested in keeping this friendship going.
  I moved to Australia and then came back a year later. She texted me super excited to see me. I tried to lock down a time to hang, and it was like déjà vu. • I hired my friend as an accountant to our company after her maternity leave. She claimed she had experience. She reported directly to me and had a good salary. It was a torture for 4 months: it turned out that she knew almost nothing, she didn’t want to learn, and she didn’t want to work.
  On Fridays, she started to come only at lunchtime. When I started asking for results, she said that I didn’t raise her salary, there was too much work, and she didn’t even have time to go online. In the end, she quit on her own when I explained that I had hired her to work, not to take up space.

  At that time I left the university for health reasons. And then I saw photos from her bachelorette party and wedding on social media, and found myself on her blacklist. I asked a mutual friend what was going on. She said that my boyfriend and I are “not good enough.” There was no place for “a simple nurse and engineer” at her wedding.

• I had a best friend, we were friends for 25 years. We worked together, were at each other’s weddings, built country houses next to each other, our children were friends.
  My husband worked for a furniture firm that took part in an exhibition. Then the exhibition samples were sold at a big discount. The friend was moving into a new flat, and I advised her to hurry up and buy furniture. She was happy, but while she and her husband were thinking, a week passed.

  My other friend though, we didn’t meet until high school, and he was quite a loser, but he had my back and we just had a good bond. Of course, it only took about a year before my high school friend was fired. He should have been fired way before that, but my boss gave him a long leash for my benefit.
