This Boy Learned to Crochet at the Age of 5 and People Now Call Him a Crocheting Prodigy
Jonah Larson is a teen crochet genius who was adopted by a loving family when he was just 6 months old. His new family noticed his huge talent and put all their effort into developing it, helping the boy to become a real crochet star. Today, we’d love for you to take a look at how this young artist has conquered the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people with his crocheted masterpieces. And his gift was even noticed by Hollywood stars!
Jonah picked up his first pair of hooks when he was just a small boy.
The crocheting star was born in the small village of Durame in southeastern Ethiopia. He was adopted when he was just 6 months old. Now he lives in La Crosse, Wisconsin (in the US), and here’s where he first discovered his love for crochet and started brightening up the world with his crafts.
At the age of 5, his aunt taught him to crochet. She gave Jonah a ball of yarn and a crochet hook. Then, the other family members showed Jonah some YouTube tutorials about crocheting, and he made his first dishcloth in less than an hour.
This gifted boy became famous very quickly. By the age of 6, he was crushing the grandmas in the county fair competitions. Today, he has his own business, which has become so popular that he had to temporarily stop taking orders.
“He’s gotten about 2,500 orders in the last 2 weeks,” his mom, Jennifer Larson, said in an interview.
The boy’s business supports his native village.
Jonah founded Jonah’s Hands LLC when he was just 11 years old. From the very first day of his adoption, his parents taught both him and his siblings the value of doing good deeds and giving back to others.
This also became the mission of Jonah’s Hands. Today, Jonah’s company generously supports the boy’s native village and the people who live there.
Jonah’s Instagram has more than 390,000 followers. But his mom says that her son’s popularity mainly comes from online boards for crocheting. Jonah himself admits that the crochet community is very kind and supportive.
The young genius loves to share his craft, knowledge, and kindness with the world.
Jonah has his own website, where he has tutorials, books, and DVDs that teach others to crochet. He also sells different goods, like dishcloths, blankets, booties, scarves, and hats, to raise money for good deeds.
So far, Jonah has raised money that helped him open a library and a science lab in his native village of Durame. And he has many more projects on the way.
As for the future, Jonah says he hopes he can inspire people who had crocheted before and then gave up to return to the hobby again.
“I hope they will pull their hooks out and keep this art going into the next generation,” said the boy in an interview.
The boy’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed, even among Hollywood stars.
Jonah has, so far, become the hero of many TV shows, and one of his most dedicated fans is Hollywood actress, Drew Barrymore. On his Instagram, Jonah proudly shows off the fabulous shawl and hat that he made for his celebrity friend. And Drew seems to be in awe of the boy’s kind soul and talent.
Jimmy Fallon and Kelly Clarkson have also become Jonah’s admirers, and they can’t keep from praising him on their shows.
The young crochet star loves it most of all when his nearest and dearest are happy, cozy, and comfortable. He also puts his heart and soul into the goods he creates for his beloved family members. In one of his Instagram posts, Jonah proudly shows a cool blanket that he made for his grandfather, captioning the photo with the warm words, “Hello Crochet Friends! I made this ‘Mad for Plaid’ Afghan for my Papa (grandpa) for his birthday. He loves it, especially as the days are getting colder!”
