Aloe vera has been known for its healing properties for thousands of years. It consists of about 99% water, and the rest is just pure goodness. Most of us have heard that it’s very effective for sunburns, but aloe vera has so many other beneficial properties that it can certainly be called a super-plant.
At Bright Side, we did some research about this amazing plant and prepared this helpful selection for our readers.
1. Treat cuts and wounds.
Aloe vera has been known for centuries as a great healer for different types of skin damage, such as cuts. It increases the growth of new skin and tissue cells and accelerates tissue regeneration. Here’s how you can use it:
- Chop the leaf in half, lengthwise.
- Place the cut side on the cut.
2. Treat burns.
Aloe vera has been used to treat small burns for a long time. It has a cooling effect like menthol does, reduces inflammation, and activates tissue and skin regeneration. Here’s how to use it:
- Cut off any spikes from the leaf.
- Cut the leaves lengthwise.
- Scoop out the clear gel with a knife.
- Apply the gel directly to the burn.
3. Treat insect bites.

Insect bites itch because of the bugs’ saliva which can contain different toxins and allergens that result in itching, swelling or irritation at different degrees. Aloe vera gives a cooling effect and relief from pain and itching and reduces inflammation.
Here’s how you prepare it:
- Cut the leaves lengthwise.
- Apply the clear gel on the affected areas.
4. Treat frostbite.
Aloe vera can be used to treat mild frostbite and reduce the damage from it. It has high levels of vitamin E which is unbeatable when it comes to skin repair. Keep in mind that frostbite is a very serious condition and if you think that you have it, it might be a good idea to get checked by a doctor. Here’s how to use it on frostbite:
- Cut the leaves lengthwise.
- Peel the yellow layer just beneath the rind.
- Apply the clear gel on the affected area.
5. Exfoliate.
Aloe vera will help you to get your skin to feel new again with this exfoliating scrub. This scrub removes dead skin cells and it’s so gentle that it can even be used on sensitive skin. There are lots of aloe vera scrubs and exfoliators available in shops these days, but you can make your own if you have the plant handy. There are many recipes and this is just one of them!
- 2 tbsp of aloe vera gel
- 2 tbsp of organic brown sugar
- 1 tsp of lemon juice
- Mix and apply it to your skin.
- Wash it off.
6. Prevent pimples and treat acne.
Aloe vera is also known for repairing skin cells and its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties which make it very effective when preventing pimples and treating acne and rosacea. It also helps with any blemishes, post-breakout scars and damaged skin thanks to its healing properties. Here’s how to use it:
- Cut the leaves lengthwise.
- Apply the clear gel to the affected area.

Aloe vera is an excellent natural moisturizer — it’s especially good for dry or sensitive skin because it absorbs very fast and moisturizes without blocking the pores, unlike many other store-bought moisturizers. Here’s how to prepare it:
- Cut the leaves lengthwise.
- Scoop 2 tsp of clear gel.
- Mix it with 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil.

- Cut the leaves lengthwise.
- Scoop the clear gel with a knife — you’ll need about 1/4 of a cup.
- Mix it with liquid soap, 3/4 of a cup.
- Add 1 tsp of vitamin E.
- Add a few drops of essential oil — it can be lavender, geranium, lemongrass or chamomile oils. All these oils are very beneficial for the skin.

Aloe vera is very effective as a hair loss treatment. It contains enzymes that repair dead skin cells on the scalp and stimulate new hair growth.
- Cut the leaves lengthwise.
- Scoop 2 tsp of clear gel.
