10 Times a Celebrity Didn’t Utter a Word and Left Their Outfit to Do All the Talking

Occasionally, while looking at some artwork, we might stop and wonder about the message the artist was trying to convey. However, that rarely happens when looking at a dress. Although considered superfluous by many, fashion can also be a meaningful form of expression. Celebrities often turn to the geniuses of design to communicate through their clothes something that is better said with an outfit.

1. Shakira

In 1994, the day Prince Charles went public with his affair with Camilla, Princess Diana stunned the world with a bodycon dress. As a result, the iconic garment became known as the “revenge dress.”

Days before Shakira announced her split from Gerard Piqué, she attended the Cannes Film Festival wearing a dress reminiscent of the one worn by the princess. That’s why some people think that the singer was sending us a message amidst the rumors about her relationship.

2. Billy Porter

For the actor, no matter the event, he always finds an opportunity to communicate something through his outfits. For the 2019 Tony Awards, Billy impressed everyone in a Swarovski-encrusted suit with a floral train representing a uterus. And why did he choose such an outfit? To support women’s reproductive rights.

“I really want to make sure that I’m showing up for all of the disenfranchised people I can so that we can find power in our unity,” he explained.

The Hollywood star made an appearance at the premiere of Ticket to Paradise in an Alexander McQueen dress that simulated street art. The garment had her and her husband’s initials (JR + DM) hand-embroidered. On the skirt, we could also see several years, including 2002, in honor of her wedding date. There were also the initials of her children: Hazel, Phinnaeus, and Henry.

4. Kristen Stewart

Just as some celebrities add something to their outfit to send a message, others do it by removing an element. That was the case for Stewart, who took off her Louboutin heels in front of photographers shortly before heading to the premiere of the film BlacKkKlansman. The actress had previously expressed her displeasure with Cannes’ ban on women wearing flats on the red carpet.

“If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either,” she had said the year before.

5. Ariana Grande

For her wedding to Dalton Gomez, the singer wore pearl and diamond earrings that were chosen to match her engagement ring. One was upside down and the other one right side up, to represent the low and high moments in her life, and how these have made her who she is now.

The actor and director decided to pay homage to Kobe Bryant at the 2020 Oscars by wearing a suit in the colors of the Lakers, the basketball team to which the former player belonged. In addition, the outfit had the number “24” embroidered on the front lapels and on the back, Kobe’s jersey number.

7. Elizabeth Taylor

The actress sparkled at every Oscar event she attended thanks to her pieces of jewelry, including what was considered the most expensive diamond in the world at the time. But for the 1992 awards, her most important accessory was a red ribbon, which she wore to raise awareness about AIDS.

Taylor was one of the first celebrities to speak out about this disease. The following year, in recognition of her efforts, she was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

8. Elle Fanning

When Maleficent was released, Elle Fanning added a little touch of playfulness to her sober outfit. The actress matched her dress with Charlotte Olympia shoes, which had a design of princess Aurora’s face.

9. Gabrielle Union

For the 2022 Met Gala, Gabrielle wore a dress accentuated by a red flower on her waist. The red crystals on the flower represented the struggle of African American people during the Gilded Age in the United States. The actress explained, “So this is inspired by Diahann Carroll, a symbol of opulence and if you will, a gilded glamour.”

10. Letitia Wright

At the premiere of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the film that paid tribute to King T’Challa after the death of the actor who played him, actress Letitia Wright stole the limelight by wearing a suit with bejeweled straps. This outfit resembled the one Chadwick Boseman wore at the 2018 Oscars. On that occasion, he did the Wakanda salute in front of the cameras, a gesture that the actress repeated.
