10+ Things You’ve Probably Been Using the Wrong Way Your Whole Life

Tips & tricks

You are about to enjoy your nicely cooked hotdog when you get the ketchup bottle out of the fridge. You start banging the bottom of it, but nothing comes out of it. And that’s because you are doing it wrong. Instead of banging the bottom of the bottle, try hitting the neck of it and you will be surprised how easily ketchup will start dripping out.

Bright Side has discovered 11 mistakes that you unknowingly make on a daily basis.

1. You store your cake wrong in your food container.

When we store our cake like the example on the left, the topping will most likely stick to the top of the container. By simply turning it upside-down, we can keep our slice of cake intact and mess-free.

2. You heat your leftovers in a square container.

Square containers don’t heat your food evenly, resulting in dry and sometimes burnt meals. That’s why spreading your food on a circular dish is advised in order to get your meal nice and warm. Also, you should avoid heating your food in plastic containers since they can leak harmful chemicals into your food. That applies especially to fatty foods, like meat and cheese.

3. You file your nails back and forth.

It is important to start from the corners of the nails and file toward the center without going back and forth. Make sure to not do it too fast, because this is something that can ruin your desired shape.

4. You don’t fold the coffee filter before placing it in the coffeemaker.

The way to place your filter is by simply folding the 2 edges. This method will offer extra strength so that the filter won’t collapse and give you actual coffee instead of warm water.

5. You wipe your mirrors with paper towels.

Despite their convenience, paper towels can leave small traces of lint on your mirror. On the other hand, a microfiber cloth is 100% lint-free and dries out the surface pretty fast. Don’t forget that you need a proper glass cleaner and not just any cleaning spray.

6. You brush your hair from top to bottom.

By using this method, you simply produce more breakage and damage and also cause the creation of more knots. In order to avoid this, you should first brush the ends of your hair and slowly work your way to the top. Spend as much time as you need on the knots and don’t force your brush over them. Also, make sure that you are using the right type of brush depending on the state and needs of your hair.

7. You eat sushi ginger as a topping.

Ginger was never meant to be eaten on top of sushi, but instead as a palette cleanser between bites. This is advised by chefs so that you are able to distinguish the unique flavors of each sushi roll.

8. You put salt in your food before microwaving it.

According to food science, salt has the tendency to break apart when it meets water. So, when you put salt on your food before microwaving it, your meal will come out dry on the spot where you put the salt. That’s why it is better to season your food right after taking it out of the microwave.

9. You clean your wooden cutting board with just soap.

Washing your chopping board with soap isn’t enough to clean all the excess dirt. That’s why, once in a while, it’s necessary to sprinkle salt all over the wooden surface and rub it with half a lemon. Make sure to rinse it afterward with a lot of extra hot water.

10. You leave the wooden spoon next to the saucepan.

If you instead put your wooden spoon on top of the saucepan, the water will never boil out of the pan. This is because when water bubbles come in contact with something below 100°C (212°F), they tend to calm down.

11. You don’t test your fabric sample in the washer.

If you wash your samples the best way possible and let them dry, you will figure out what the best method of washing is. If they shrink, it means that you washed them the wrong way and you need to use a different temperature.

Which one of the above tricks surprised you the most? Do you happen to know of any other mistakes that we make regularly in our daily lives?
