What Might Happen to Your Skin If You Stop Eating Salt

When we decide to start eating healthy, salt is often one of the first things we want to banish from our diet once and for all. While it is true that eating too much salt is harmful to your health, not getting enough sodium on a daily basis can also affect your overall wellbeing. Sodium is an essential electrolyte that is responsible for keeping fluid within the cells of your body, and cutting it out of your diet completely might not be the best choice for the health and beauty of your skin.

We at Bright Side also tried to follow a low sodium diet, and we decided to find out how not eating salt might affect your skin.

1. You may develop skin tags over time.

Although watching how much salt you eat can definitely benefit your health, cutting it out from your diet completely might not be the best choice. When you don’t get enough sodium on a daily basis, over time it might affect your insulin resistance, which, in turn, will be noticeable on your skin. If your body doesn’t respond well to insulin, it may lead to unwanted hair growth and skin tags that aren’t easy to get rid of.

2. You might notice a net-like pattern on your skin.

Following a low sodium diet might be just what the doctor ordered for people who already suffer from heart conditions. But if you never complained about your heart, eating less salt than your body needs might actually affect it. When your cardiovascular health is out of balance, it might also be visible on your skin and cause your body to develop a blue or purple net-like pattern on your skin.

3. Your skin might dry out.

Keeping your skin well hydrated is key if you want your face to appear youthful and smooth with fewer fine lines. Cutting out salt completely from your diet might actually prevent you from achieving that because when your body doesn’t get enough sodium, it might cause symptoms similar to dehydration. This, in turn, might make your skin appear dry and wrinkly, especially around your mouth, lips, and eyes.

4. Your skin may lose its elasticity.

You might be spending lots of money on expensive creams and moisturizers that are meant to make your skin look bright and plump, but not getting enough sodium might actually sabotage all your efforts. If there’s too little sodium in your body, it might cause your skin to lose its volume and elasticity and appear saggy.
