“I Wouldn’t Wish It on Anyone,” a Woman Who Got £1,000,000 at Age 17 Reveals Why She Regrets It So Much
In 2013, a young Scottish woman, Jane Park, was only 17 when she won £1 million in the lottery, which equated to more than $1.5 million in 2013, making her the EuroMillions’ youngest winner ever. But since then, Jane’s life has been far from the fairy tale one might expect. The young woman even admitted that she has major regrets regarding her win. And later on, she even contributed to changing a fundamental rule related to the lottery participants.
Her ’’golden ticket’’
During an interview on Dr. Phil, Park recalled the day she found out that she was the lucky winner and how she ran home from the store to announce the exciting news, comparing it to a scene from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.
And given that it was pretty much ’’unheard’’ of for someone as young as her to win the jackpot, Park explained that she was ’’encouraged’’ to go public. However, this later turned out to be a big mistake, as she explained, ’’My only regret would be going so public.’’
How she spent the prize money
Park described herself back then as a ’’young, naïve 17-year-old.’’ She explained that a part of the sum went to plastic surgery, which included a breast augmentation and a butt lift. She also added that she wouldn’t have done these things if she hadn’t won so much money all of a sudden.
The young woman even ended up suffering from complications after one of the surgeries and had to spend a month recovering at the hospital.
The money made her unhappy.
Park admitted, ’’I have material things, but apart from that, my life is empty. What is my purpose in life?’’ At one point she even went back to working at a chip shop because she realized that she preferred to have a ’’working routine.’’
Following the challenges she had to face after her win, the 27-year-old thinks, ’’My life would be so much easier if I hadn’t won.’’ She opened up about it, saying, ’’I wish I’d never won it, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.’’ She added, ’’ I thought it would make it 10 times better but it’s made it 10 times worse.’’
She made a huge impact on the future of the lottery.
The young woman described the experience of winning that much money at a very young age as a not-so-bright ’’fairy tale that I think no one actually warns you about.’’
This is why she was determined to do something to change this reality somehow, and as of late, Park has been raising awareness about how the age limit of playing the lottery should be increased from 16 to 18 in the UK. And now that the age has been raised to 18, Park feels a sense of accomplishment and admits, ’’I feel like I made a massive impact on that.’’
What do you think of Jane Park’s story? Do you agree that suddenly winning a big sum at a young age can be unsettling?
