Rihanna’s Charity Work Proves That She’s Set to Change the World for the Better
Robyn Rihanna Fenty, better known as Rihanna, is a singer, actress, businesswoman, diplomat, philanthropist, and writer who was born in Saint Michael, Barbados, 32 years ago (February 20, 1988). Rihanna had a difficult childhood with her parents, but she has never stopped trying to excel and improve herself. She soon became an award-winning singer and one of the most successful and influential women of the twenty-first century.
Her life story and everything she had to face and overcome led her to create and help different social causes that demonstrate, repeatedly and in different ways, her humanitarian and philanthropic side.
Here at Bright Side, we want to share with you an altruistic and charitable facette of one of the most famous artists of our time. We reviewed the causes she supports and the awards she has received for what she’s done.
1. Her first steps in the world of charity
In 2006, when Rihanna was barely 18 years old, she created the Believe Foundation, a public organization meant to help children with potentially terminal illnesses such as cancer, AIDS, and leukemia. This foundation provides the necessary supplies to under-resourced and under-funded schools. It also donates clothing for children living in homeless shelters. Her efforts and all the work she has carried out through this organization have been praised by the media over the years. She was honored by the organization in 2011.
In 2008, the singer joined other celebrities to raise awareness about the battle against AIDS through a fashion campaign organized by H&M to promote their new collection. The renowned fast-fashion brand donated a share of the profits from this collection to the fight against this disease and raised millions of dollars.
That very same year, the singer was one of 15 female artists who took part in a television special called Stand Up to Cancer. The goal was to raise as many funds as possible to finance cancer research. They managed to raise a stunningly high amount of $100 million.
2. A foundation with a global reach
As early as 2012, Rihanna performed in a charity gig at the House of Blues in Los Angeles that was aimed at raising money for the Children’s Orthopaedic Center. She also took part in the Mark Taper-Johnny Merceren Artist Program for the children’s hospital.
The artist then created the Clara Lionel Foundation (named after the singer’s grandparents), also in 2012, with the purpose of providing education and health assistance to the people of Barbados. Through the foundation, aid was provided to Barbadians in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian. Today, the foundation has extended its activities and offers education, health, and emergency aid programs all over the world. Here are just a few:
- The Clara Lionel Foundation’s global scholarship program
- Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados
- Barbados Micro Grant Program
Shortly thereafter, the singer donated modern radiotherapy equipment worth $1.75 million to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados, which would later change its name to the Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, in honor of Rihanna’s late grandmother.
Every year, the famous singer organizes a charity gala known as The Diamond Ball. It’s meant to raise funds for the Clara Lionel Foundation by charging a high entrance fee and carrying out a live auction. Attendees include a large number of well-known actresses and actors, singers, celebrities, and all kinds of Hollywood personalities.
By 2013, Rihanna was involved in 2 lipstick campaigns for the popular makeup brand, MAC. The first campaign managed to raise up to $60 million for women and children affected by AIDS. One year later, in 2014, the singer collaborated with UNAIDS to provide the necessary treatment and means of information for preventing the spread of the disease.
A few years later, in 2016, Rihanna teamed up with the Global Partnership for Education and the Global Citizen Project to address the global education crisis. Thanks to her proactive advocacy, Rihanna became the first global ambassador of the project.
3. New causes and social bonds
2017 began with a trip for Rihanna, who visited Malawi in January as an ambassador for the Global Partnership for Education together with the aforementioned Global Citizen Project. During the trip, she met with educators, students, and officials to improve the quality of education for the country’s future generations.
That same year, the entrepreneur founded Fenty Beauty, an inclusive cosmetic brand for all skin tones and colors. She also received the Peter J. Gomes Humanitarian Award from the Harvard Foundation at its Massachusetts campus, due to her outstanding commitment to humanitarian work.
In addition to all the causes we have named so far, Rihanna has also worked together with Bid 2 Beat AIDS, City of Hope, Dosomething.org, Feeding America, Save the Children, UNICEF, Alzheimer’s Association, Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Kids Wish Network, Live Earth, and Mission Australia, just to name a few.
Today, Rihanna continues to support these causes, foundations, and associations. She has been also been awarded by the NAACP for both her singing career and her continuous efforts to support philanthropic work. So far, this year alone, she reportedly donated several millions of dollars to the research and treatment of diseases, making her one of the few celebrities that has stepped up to the challenges our world is facing at the moment.
